7 Origins of Place Names in Indonesia Not Many People Know

Many cities in Indonesia which you should already explore, but the extent to which you get to know the cities, or at least the history of names?

1.  Samarinda

This city was named Samarinda (with Rinda), not as many girls named Rinda, but originated from the word "Sama Rendah" (equal in low). Beginning in this city a lot of people from the same background, both natives and migrants. Immigrants dominated the Bugis people of South Sulawesi, which together people Wajo build settlements along the Mahakam river. 2.  Salatiga

3.  Pontianak

The word "Pontianak" is Malay for Kuntilanak. Kuntilanak is supernatural beings with female form. So called because according to myth, a group led by Syarif Abdurrahman often plagued by ghosts kuntilanak when down the Kapuas River. Sharif even forced to open fire cannons to chase away the ghosts kuntilanak.


4.  Banyuwangi

Long ago the eastern tip of Java Island region is headed by a king named Prabu Sulahkromo. He was crazy about Sri Tanjung, his own vice's wife, named Patih Sidopekso. Because Sri Tanjung still reject his love, he slandered Sri Tanjung and told Sidopekso that he had been having an affair. Sidopekso furious and killed his own wife and threw her body into the river. Shortly thereafter, the delicious scent of the river out. Banyu = water, wangi = fragrant. Since then the area was referred to as Banyuwangi (fragrant water).


5.  Malang

There is a legend saying Malang derived from the word "Denied" or "hinder" (in Javanese means Malang). 6.  Balikpapan

Legend tells in 1739, Sultan Muhammad Idris of Kutai kingdom, ordered the settlers along the Gulf of Balikpapan to donate building materials for the construction of a new palace in the old Kutai. Donations in the form of delivery of 1,000 pieces of board were tied into a raft that was brought to Kutai Lama through along the coast. 7.  Bandung
